A Word From The Author
I lived in Denmark for 5 years, and winters were undeniably the hardest part of the year. It didn’t make it any easier that they lasted 4-5 months, each one feeling like an eternity of darkness. I struggled with the cold, the lack of sunlight, and the feeling of isolation that seemed to seep into every corner of my life. Every year, I’d go into winter with new strategies, trying different ways to stay positive, pick up nuggets of wisdom along the way, and stay connected to the world outside. But despite all the advice and tips I gathered, I always wished someone would just tell me how to make it easier. That’s why I wrote this book. I want to share what worked for me and hopefully make someone else’s winter a little brighter.

Before this book, I thought SAD lamps were a scam. Then February hit, and I started contemplating hibernation. The chapter on light therapy had me crying with laughter while also frantically adding a SAD lamp to my cart. Now, I bask in artificial sunlight like a well-adjusted human, and my Danish friends are impressed I survived my first winter without losing my will to live. Highly recommend!

I bought this book as a joke before my first Danish winter, but by December, it became my survival bible. The humor kept me sane, the advice kept me warm, and the part about Danish small talk? So painfully accurate, I made my Danish boyfriend read it. Now, we both nod in silence at bus stops and accept our fate. 10/10, would buy again—if only to gift it to my next unsuspecting expat friend.

Nobody warned me about julefrokost. I walked in expecting a cozy Christmas lunch and walked out (barely) questioning my own moral compass. This book prepared me for the chaos, the liver pâté ambush, and the inevitable snaps-fueled blackout—and yet, I still underestimated it. I laughed so hard while reading, I had to share it with my Danish colleagues, who confirmed: ‘Yes. This is the way.’”

I moved to Denmark thinking my stylish wool coat from London would be enough. Spoiler: It was not. By November, I was a frozen, shivering mess—until I read this book and immediately bought the Arctic-grade survival kit it recommended. Now, I layer like a seasoned Viking and actually feel superior watching tourists suffer in the wind. Hilarious and life-saving—I’ve forced every expat friend to read it.
