The Truth About Living in Denmark: Things to Know Before You Move

Denmark gets a lot of love as this dreamy, progressive haven where everything just seems to work. And honestly, for some people, it really is! But after spending five years living there, I think it’s time to pull back the curtain and talk about a few things that don’t always show up in those glossy travel blogs. This isn’t about bashing Denmark—far from it. It’s about sharing a more balanced perspective. And hey, if you want to hear the full story, check out my YouTube video here.

Why Denmark is Worth Visiting

Let’s start with the good stuff, because Denmark has a lot going for it. The quality of life is genuinely top-notch. The biking culture? Love it. The government’s focus on health and happiness? Incredible. And the infrastructure? Seriously impressive.

The friends I made there are amazing people, and overall, my time in Denmark shaped me in ways I’ll always be grateful for. Visiting Denmark? Absolutely, go for it. But moving there? Well, that’s where things get a little more complicated.

1. Living Costs: Buckle Up

Copenhagen is a gorgeous city, but let’s be real—it’s expensive. Housing can be a real headache. Locals get on housing waitlists practically from birth, so finding a decent place as a newcomer can feel like playing the lottery. Buying property? Even harder unless you’ve got deep pockets.

Groceries and dining out are pricey too. I remember going back to the UK for a conference and being shocked at how much cheaper my Waitrose grocery haul was compared to my usual shopping in Denmark. And don’t even get me started on alcohol prices—your wallet will feel it every time you go out for a drink.

2. Taxes: Yay Equality, But…

Denmark’s tax system is one of the most progressive in the world, and while it funds an incredible welfare state, the 60% income tax can feel like a lot. If you’re someone who thrives on ambition and career growth, you might find it a bit disheartening to see such a big chunk of your paycheck disappear.

3. Making Friends Takes Time

This one hit me hard. Danes are lovely people, but they tend to stick with the friends they’ve had since kindergarten. As an expat, breaking into those tight-knit circles takes patience—and a lot of effort. I was lucky to meet some amazing exceptions, but for many foreigners, loneliness can be a real challenge.

4. Language Barriers Are Real

Yes, most Danes speak English, but learning Danish is pretty much essential if you want to fully integrate. Whether it’s chatting with your doctor or reading legal documents, knowing the language makes life a lot easier. That said, learning Danish as an adult isn’t exactly a walk in the park—especially if you’re juggling work or studies.

5. The Weather (And the Wind)

Oh, the weather. Winters in Denmark are dark, gray, and loooong. If you’re someone who thrives on sunlight, the lack of it can be tough. And then there’s the wind—relentless and unforgiving. Cycling against it? A nightmare. I’ve lost count of the times I gave up and just walked my bike.

On the bright side, the Danes have mastered the art of hygge—creating cozy, comforting spaces to counter the gloom. It’s a lovely cultural practice, but it doesn’t erase the reality of those dark, rainy months.

6. Navigating Danish Society

To really integrate into Danish life, you need to learn the language and embrace the culture. Most workplaces accommodate English speakers, but for things like job hunting, you’ll often find that knowing Danish is non-negotiable. It’s their country, after all, and adapting is part of the deal—but it’s definitely not easy.

Final Thoughts

Living in Denmark was an incredible chapter of my life, and I wouldn’t trade it for anything. But like anywhere, it’s not perfect. If you’re thinking about making the move, make sure you’re ready for both the highs and the challenges.
